Environmental Studies (EVS)
Grade: Nursery to Grade 7

Environmental Studies (EVS) is an essential subject in school that nurtures awareness and appreciation for the natural world. It focuses on understanding the relationships between humans, society, and the environment, promoting the values of sustainability and ecological responsibility.

Environmental Studies (EVS) introduces students to their surroundings, helping them understand and appreciate the natural world, human interactions, and sustainable living. The subject develops curiosity, responsibility, and an ecological perspective from an early age.

Nursery: Exploring the Immediate Environment

At this level, the focus is on helping children observe and identify elements of their surroundings.

  • Key Themes:
    • Family and friends.
    • Common animals, birds, and plants.
    • Daily routines and hygiene.
    • Weather and seasons.
  • Activities:
    • Nature walks to observe trees, flowers, and insects.
    • Songs and stories about animals and the weather.
    • Hands-on activities like watering plants or sorting natural objects.

Grade 1–2: Understanding Basic Environment Concepts

Students begin to learn about broader environmental elements and their significance.

  • Key Topics:
    • My family, neighborhood, and school environment.
    • Air, water, and food as essentials of life.
    • Basic needs of animals and humans.
    • Importance of cleanliness and personal hygiene.
  • Activities:
    • Simple experiments like observing water evaporation.
    • Drawing or crafting projects on "My House" or "Favorite Animal."
    • Role-play activities about maintaining hygiene.

Grade 3–4: Expanding Awareness of Nature and Resources

The focus is on interdependence between living and non-living elements of the environment.

  • Key Topics:
    • Water sources, uses, and conservation.
    • Soil, plants, and their role in our lives.
    • Food: Where does it come from?
    • Basic introduction to pollution.
  • Activities:
    • Growing plants from seeds and maintaining a class garden.
    • Map-drawing activities to locate water bodies in the area.
    • Group discussions on reducing wastage of water and food.

Grade 5–6: Deeper Understanding of Sustainability and Ecology

In these grades, students begin to think critically about environmental issues and sustainable solutions.

  • Key Topics:
    • Ecosystems: Relationships between plants, animals, and humans.
    • Natural resources: Renewable and non-renewable.
    • Pollution: Types, causes, and solutions.
    • Climate change and global warming basics.
    • Conservation of wildlife and natural habitats.
  • Activities:
    • Science experiments, such as testing water quality or soil properties.
    • Field trips to nature reserves, farms, or water treatment plants.
    • Poster-making on environmental themes like "Save Trees" or "Clean Air."

Grade 7: Advanced Environmental Education and Critical Thinking

By Grade 7, the EVS curriculum emphasizes the interconnections between global issues, human activities, and sustainable development.

  • Key Topics:
    • Environmental challenges: Deforestation, desertification, and loss of biodiversity.
    • Green energy: Solar, wind, and hydroelectric power.
    • Waste management: Reduce, reuse, and recycle.
    • Disaster preparedness: Natural disasters like floods, droughts, and earthquakes.
    • The role of individuals and governments in environmental conservation.
  • Activities:
    • Research projects on renewable energy sources.
    • Debates on current environmental issues like plastic waste.
